Canadian Music Rules in One Week

Michael McGowan's unabashedly Canadian feature 'One Week' is writer/director Michael McGowan's second feature film following 'Saint Ralph'. It boasts a great Canadian cast and stars Joshua Jackson in the lead role as Ben Tyler, Campbell Scott as the narrator and Liane Balaban as Ben's fiancee. The film features a road trip west across Canada and the scenery is beautifully shot in 30 iconic and idiosyncratic locations with many little touches emphasizing the Canadian connection. The awesome soundtrack, which parallels Ben's physical and emotional journey, features many top acts from the Canadian indie music scene and beckons to be enjoyed further.

Here is the soundtrack list with internet links to the songs where possible.

  1. This is a very Canadian movie, not only in the use of the gorgeous cross-country scenery that provides both a backdrop and a reflective commentary on the main character's personal search but also because of it is patently outside the realm of the "regular" Hollywood (i.e. American) fare. This is not to suggest that only Canucks can enjoy or appreciate this wonderful, warm-hearted, evocative, simple story because the plot line and embedded themes are universal and timeless.

There is a leisurely quality to this narrative and a kind of inevitability to the whole story that makes it poignant yet full of strength at the same time. The voice-over done by a sonorously voiced Campbell Scott works so well that far from being intrusive as most add-ons are, it (he) becomes a character in his (its) own right.

This is one of those "festival sleepers" that will never have wide distribution but which will delight and uplift any who see it.

  2. Loved the movie. Really loved the soundtrack. Where can one get Luke Doucet and Melissa Maclelland's version of Un Canadien Errant ?

  3. Thanks for posting. I agree...one of the finest soundtracks and on a bare budget. As a comparative note, the great Canadian film C.R.A.Z.Y. had an awesome soundtrack of fairly well known songs. The budget for that soundtrack was $600 000 almost 1/3 of the whole budget of One Week. The cost of their soundtrack was so much that the producer's couldn't approve it so the writer/director cut his own salary to cover the cost. As it was he wasn't able to get all his desired choices as some of the other songs he wanted were even more prohibitably priced. As it was the $600 000 was only for screenings in Canada and as a result the film was never screened in the U.S.

The One Week website has a nice page with the McClelland and Doucet version of Un Canadien Errant. It doesn't have an Itunes link but contains the song details as did my original post. At least you can hear it here.

  4. Hello Julian,
I just recently watched the movie and I loved it. I'm looking everywhere for a song that is played at the very end of the movie, on the narrator part and when the phrase 'to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield' is shown (also, before the song 'un canadien errant' and it also continues playing after it.

    if you check this link

    http://www.wisevid.com/view_video.php?viewkey=4399a12587a6da04408e#

it starts playing at min 88, and after 'un canadien errant', it continues playing at min 93
If you know the name of the song, i would greatly appreciate it :)
    thanks a lot,
    - Eric

  5. Hi Schampton:

My apologies for the delay but I was trying to get the answer for you.

My guess is that it's part of the score by the composer Andrew Lockington. I emailed him to ask the question but have not received a response.

I'll let you know if I get a response.

  6. Hi Julian,
thanks for the reply. It's Andrew Lockington. The song playing before 'un canadien errant' is called 'climbing', and the one after is 'ben'. I found 'ben' in amazon and bought it for 99 cents, but can't find climbing anywhere... anyway, thanks again. i'll email you 'ben' in mp3 ;)
    regards,
    - Eric

  11. I am absolutely desperate to find the version of Un Candien Errant that plays in the credits. I've looked everywhere I can think of to no avail, any ideas?

This movie has one of the best soundtracks ever, it's so disappointing there's no way to buy the whole thing.

  12. Agree that the soundtrack is astounding.

I suggest buying the DVD which is readily available. It's a darn good dvd to have - great movie, great music.

Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet (husband and wife) both have my space sites. Perhaps go on there and see if you can get info from them on where to purchase it. They may have an alternative for you.
